Hadith
A curated selection from the six books, with narrator and reference for each.
Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended. So whoever migrated for Allah and His Messenger, their migration is for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever migrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, their migration is for what they migrated to.
None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should be generous to his neighbour. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should be generous to his guest.
The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.
The strong person is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the one who controls himself while in anger.
Protect yourself from the Fire even with half a date in charity; and if you cannot find that, then with a kind word.
Whoever relieves a believer of a hardship in this world, Allah will relieve him of a hardship on the Day of Resurrection. Allah helps His servant as long as the servant helps his brother.
Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.
Purity is half of faith. Alhamdulillah fills the scales, and SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah fill what is between the heavens and the earth.
Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives another except that Allah increases him in honour. And no one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him.
The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are like one body: when one limb suffers, the whole body responds with wakefulness and fever.
The Prophet said to Mu'adh: Never leave saying after every prayer — O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well.
I guarantee a house in the outskirts of Paradise for one who gives up arguing even if he is right; a house in the middle of Paradise for one who gives up lying even in jest; and a house in the highest part of Paradise for one who makes his character good.
The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that asks.
Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask of Allah; when you seek help, seek help from Allah.
Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good one and it will wipe it out, and treat people with good character.
Your smile in the face of your brother is charity for you.
Whoever goes out seeking knowledge is on the path of Allah until he returns.
The best charity is that given out of sufficiency, and begin with those you are responsible for.
The best remembrance is 'La ilaha illallah', and the best supplication is 'Alhamdulillah'.
Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.
Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.
A man came and said: Messenger of Allah, show me a deed that if I do it Allah will love me and people will love me. He said: Be detached from this world and Allah will love you; be detached from what people have and people will love you.
Islam is built on five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, establishing the prayer, paying zakat, pilgrimage to the House, and fasting Ramadan.
Fasting is a shield. So when one of you is fasting, he should not behave badly or raise his voice; if someone insults him or fights him, let him say: I am fasting.
The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, though there is good in both. Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not give up.
Allah said: My servants, I have forbidden injustice for Myself and forbidden it among you, so do not wrong one another.
If you relied upon Allah as He should be relied upon, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and return full.
A man asked: Messenger of Allah, who is most deserving of my good company? He said: Your mother. The man asked: Then who? He said: Your mother. Then who? Your mother. Then who? Your father.
The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will be merciful to you.
About the hadith collections
Hadith are the recorded sayings, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They
are the second source of Islamic law after the Qur'an and cover every aspect of life —
from worship and morals to transactions and family matters. The most authoritative
collections are the “six books” (al-Kutub al-Sittah): Sahih al-Bukhari,
Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah.
Wording follows widely used English renderings. For study, check each hadith against a
published edition of its collection.
Hadith questions people ask
What is a hadith?
A hadith is a report of what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, did or silently approved. Each hadith has a chain of narrators (isnad) and a text (matn). Scholars graded them by the reliability of each narrator in the chain.
What does "sahih" mean?
Sahih means authentic. A sahih hadith has an unbroken chain of trustworthy narrators and a text free of hidden defects. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are regarded as the two most authentic collections.
What are the six major hadith collections?
They are Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah. Together they are called al-Kutub al-Sittah (the Six Books) and form the core reference for hadith scholarship.
How do I search hadith on this page?
Type a keyword — such as "prayer", "charity" or "patience" — into the search box above. You can also filter by collection. Every result shows the narrator, book and reference number so you can verify it in a published edition.
Can I rely on the English translations here?
The English wording follows widely used renderings and is suitable for general reading. For detailed study or deriving rulings, check the Arabic original in a published edition of the collection.
